What affects the scope
Every job is different, and the independent pro who does the work sets their own price. These are the things they will usually need to know before they can estimate:
- Volume and weight
- Whether items are inside the house or already at the curb
- Carry distance, including stairs, basements, and gated access
- Anything needing special disposal, such as tires or an appliance containing freon

Scope and licensing: Hazardous materials such as paint, chemicals, solvents, asbestos, and auto fluids are not standard junk-removal items anywhere in the valley. Free and low-cost options in Herriman before you hire anyone
Not every load needs a pro. If what you are getting rid of fits what the city or the landfill will take, these are cheaper than hiring anyone, and worth checking first.
- Herriman Citywide Cleanup is free for residents at Butterfield Park, 14200 S 6400 W. The fall cleanup runs September 8–12. Bring proof of Herriman residency and your postcard; two loads per household, and one mattress or box spring per postcard.
- Trans-Jordan Landfill, 10473 S Bacchus Hwy in South Jordan, charges a $15 minimum and then $41 a ton. Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, closed Sunday. Card only, no cash. Tires run $4 each off the rim and $5 on.
- The Trans-Jordan transfer station in Sandy, 8813 S 700 W, is $20 minimum and $51 a ton, and is the shorter drive from the east side of the valley.
- Landfill vouchers from Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District waive the gate fee for a car, SUV, pickup up to one ton, or a hand-unloaded trailer.
Where the free options run out. The city cleanup will not take refrigerators, freezers, tires, paint, batteries, small-engine equipment, or hazardous waste, and landfill vouchers specifically do not cover mattresses, tires, or anything containing freon. A dead fridge, a second mattress, or a set of old tires has no free path in Herriman. That gap is usually where paying someone starts to make sense.
Worth knowing whoever ends up driving it: Utah Code 72-7-410 requires loads to be covered on the way to the landfill, and an uncovered load can cost you more at the gate than the junk was worth.

How is junk removal priced?
Almost always by the space your load takes up in the truck, from a single item to a full load, rather than by the hour. Herriman Handyman Co. does not set prices. The independent pro who does the work gives you their own number up front, including loading and disposal, and you agree it directly with them.
What actually goes into the price?
Three things: how much room the load takes and what it weighs, how far it has to be carried before it reaches the truck, and what the pro pays at the gate. Public disposal in this area starts at a $15 minimum and $41 a ton at Trans-Jordan, more for tires or anything needing special handling, and that cost sits inside whatever you are quoted.
How do I know I am not overpaying?
Get the number before any work starts, and get it as one figure that includes labor, the drive, and the dump fee, since those are the pieces that tend to reappear later. Ask whether it changes if the load turns out bigger than it looked. Ask whether the pro is licensed and insured for the work, and what happens if something gets damaged on the way out.
Do they take appliances and mattresses?
Furniture, mattresses, and most appliances, yes. Hazardous materials such as paint, chemicals, solvents, and asbestos are not standard junk-removal items and go to Salt Lake County's household hazardous waste facility instead.
What about a refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioner?
Anything containing freon is handled separately. Herriman's citywide cleanup will not accept refrigerators or freezers, and Wasatch Front landfill vouchers do not cover freon-containing units either, so there is no free route for one in Herriman. Mention it when you describe the job, because it changes both the price and where the unit can go.
Do I need to move everything to the curb first?
No. Loading from wherever the item sits, inside or out, is normal for this work. Say up front if it is in a basement, up stairs, or behind a gate, since carry distance is one of the things that moves the price.
How quickly can someone come out?
It depends on who is free. We review every request by hand and put you in touch if an independent local pro has availability, so sending a request is not a booking and does not guarantee someone is available that day. If the job is time-sensitive, say so in the request.
What happens to the stuff after it leaves?
That is up to the pro, and it is a fair thing to ask before you agree. Some sort for donation or metal recycling first and only landfill the rest; others take everything straight to Trans-Jordan. If it matters to you that a working appliance or usable furniture gets rehomed, say so up front.
